For most small online sellers, USPS Ground Advantage is the cheaper choice and Priority Mail is the faster one. As of October 2026, USPS lists Ground Advantage at 2 to 5 days and Priority Mail typically at 2 to 3 days, and both include tracking and up to $100 of insurance. The price gap per parcel is small, so the right pick depends on your weight, your zone and how much speed you want to promise buyers.

Ground Advantage and Priority Mail side by side

Both are USPS services for packages up to 70 lb, but they are priced and promised differently. This is what USPS says on its own pages:

Ground Advantage Priority Mail
Delivery time 2 to 5 days Typically 2 to 3 days
Weight limit 70 lb 70 lb
Tracking Included Included
Insurance $100 included Up to $100 with most shipments
Free pickup Yes Yes

USPS adds that the Priority Mail delivery date is not a money-back guarantee. For Ground Advantage, parcels to places like Alaska, Hawaii and offshore destinations, or with hazardous materials, may take longer. You can buy up to $5,000 in extra coverage on Ground Advantage.

Retail prices by weight and zone

The USPS price list (Notice 123), effective October 4, 2026, shows these retail prices per parcel:

Weight Ground Advantage, Zone 1 Ground Advantage, Zone 2 Priority Mail, Zone 1 Priority Mail, Zone 2
1 lb $10.05 $10.45 $11.50 $12.00
2 lb $11.30 $12.00 $12.45 $13.15
5 lb $13.75 $14.35 $15.10 $15.75

For lighter parcels, Ground Advantage lists $8.40 for 4 oz and 8 oz in Zone 1 and $8.55 in Zone 2. Priority Mail’s table starts at 1 lb. A zone is the distance band between the origin ZIP code and the destination: a higher number means a longer trip. Ground Advantage at Zone 8 costs $10.20 for 4 oz, $13.65 for 1 lb, $19.80 for 2 lb and $27.45 for 5 lb.

These are retail prices. USPS notes that commercial pricing, such as through Click-N-Ship, is lower, so check what your shipping software shows.

When does Priority Mail cost less?

By these tables, Ground Advantage is cheaper at every weight and zone shown. The gap, using the table above:

  • 1 lb in Zone 1: $11.50 minus $10.05 is $1.45 more for Priority.
  • 2 lb in Zone 2: $13.15 minus $12.00 is $1.15 more.
  • 5 lb in Zone 2: $15.75 minus $14.35 is $1.40 more.

For a seller shipping 300 one-pound parcels a month in Zone 1, that is about $435 a month in extra postage if all of them go Priority. The extra cost buys you a typical 2 to 3 day estimate and nothing else: the included insurance and tracking are the same.

What about Flat Rate boxes?

Flat Rate is a Priority Mail option where the price depends on the box, not on weight or distance within the U.S. USPS lists these examples at a Post Office: Flat Rate Envelope $13.90, Small Flat Rate Box $14.65, Medium Flat Rate Boxes $25.80 and Large Flat Rate Box $36.10. USPS provides the packaging for free.

Compare with the weight-based table: a 5 lb parcel to Zone 2 costs $15.75 on regular Priority Mail, against $25.80 in a Medium Flat Rate Box. In our view, Flat Rate only makes sense for dense, heavy items going far, where the weight-based price would be higher. Run both quotes before buying boxes.

Size rules that add cost

Ground Advantage prices parcels under 16 oz in tiers of 4, 8, 12 and 15.999 oz and heavier parcels by the pound, rounded up. The combined length and girth can be no more than 130 inches. Packages over 1 cubic foot are subject to dimensional weight pricing, calculated as length × width × height ÷ 139. Extra fees apply to parcels over 22 inches long or over 2 cubic feet, and to nonstandard shapes or materials.

USPS also changed the cubic-priced services in 2026. A Postal Bulletin says that, effective July 12, 2026, the maximum dimension for Priority Mail Cubic and Ground Advantage Cubic pieces rises from 18 to 22 inches, and Ground Advantage Cubic soft pack tiers drop from 10 to 5. Cubic rates are meant for small, dense parcels. Check your shipping software for eligibility.

How to choose, step by step

  1. Weigh and measure the packed parcel, not the product.
  2. Get quotes for both services in your shipping software or on USPS for your usual zones.
  3. Use Ground Advantage by default, and Priority Mail when the buyer has paid for faster delivery or the estimate is a selling point.
  4. Set honest delivery promises. The FTC shipping rule for online sellers sets what online sellers owe buyers on shipping times, so read it before you promise a date.
  5. Add shipping to your price from the start. See how to price products to sell online.

Sellers who should compare other carriers first

If you sell through Amazon FBA, the marketplace handles shipping, so see Amazon FBA vs FBM instead. Sellers who already have negotiated carrier rates with UPS or FedEx should compare against those, because this article covers USPS retail prices only.
