As of October 2026, Shopify lists Basic at $29 a month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly), Grow at $79 ($105) and Advanced at $299 ($399). On top of the subscription, each card sale carries a percentage fee plus 30 cents. All prices on the pricing page are in US dollars.
How much does each plan cost?
This is the table from Shopify’s pricing page, with amounts per month:
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Online card rate (standard) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29 | $39 | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Grow | $79 | $105 | 2.7% + 30¢ |
| Advanced | $299 | $399 | 2.5% + 30¢ |
| Plus | not listed | from $2,300 | 2.25% + 30¢ |
Plus is aimed at large operations and sits outside the budget of anyone starting out. The page also says there are no setup fees on any plan. Prices and rules can change, so check the official page before you subscribe.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. The page lists a 3-day free trial, then $1 a month for 3 months on most plans, and the FAQ says no credit card is required for the trial. After that, full price applies. Put the date on your calendar so it does not catch you off guard, and judge in the first few days whether you can realistically get the store ready.
What does one sale cost you?
Use your plan’s rate. Here is our own example to show the math, for a $100 sale paid by card online at the standard rate:
- Basic: 2.9% of $100 = $2.90, plus $0.30 = $3.20 (3.2% of the sale).
- Grow: 2.7% = $2.70, plus $0.30 = $3.00.
- Advanced: 2.5% = $2.50, plus $0.30 = $2.80.
The page also lists higher “premium” card rates (3.5% + 30¢ on Basic), a 1% add-on for international online cards, and lower in-person rates (2.6% + 10¢ on Basic). Your mix of customers changes your real average cost.
Should you pay yearly or monthly?
On Basic, the gap is $10 a month: $29 x 12 = $348 a year versus $39 x 12 = $468. That saves $120. On Grow, the gap is $26 a month, or $312 a year. In our view, yearly billing only makes sense once the store has proven it sells, because you commit for a year. If you are just starting, monthly costs more but leaves room to walk away.
When does the third-party fee apply?
The page lists an extra transaction fee when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Shopify charges this, and it comes on top of whatever your provider charges. Example: on a $100 Basic sale with an outside provider, that is $2 to Shopify plus the provider’s own fee.
What other costs should you expect?
The subscription is not the full cost of running a store. Typical extras:
- A custom domain.
- Paid apps for reviews, shipping, email marketing and other functions.
- Shipping and packaging, which depend on your operation.
- Advertising to bring visitors. Your own store does not bring traffic by itself the way a marketplace does.
- A paid theme, if you do not want a free one.
The pricing page does not break down these items, so get quotes or check before counting on them.
Which plan should you pick?
- Just starting, low volume: Basic. The core features are there, and the higher card rate matters little with few sales.
- Need accounts for a team: Grow includes 5 staff accounts and Advanced includes 15. Basic includes no additional staff accounts, per the page.
- Selling in volume where the fee gap pays for the upgrade: run the numbers. From Basic to Grow, the card rate drops 0.2 percentage points. On $5,000 of monthly sales, that is $10 less in percentage fees, below the $50 gap between the plans on yearly billing. In other words, Grow pays for itself only at much higher volume, or if you need something it includes.
When is Shopify not the best choice?
If you only want to sell a few products and test demand, a marketplace avoids the monthly fee and brings built-in traffic, although it takes a commission on each sale. Your own store makes more sense when you already have an audience, want to control your brand and customer relationship, or sell on more than one channel. Do not count on a return: the cost is certain, the sale is not.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify charge per sale on top of the subscription?
Yes. There is the card rate (for example, 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic for standard online payments) and, if you use an outside provider, the plan’s third-party fee.
Can I try it before paying?
The page lists a 3-day free trial, then $1 a month for 3 months on most plans.
Is the yearly plan worth it?
On price, yes: Basic costs $120 less per year. But it is a one-year commitment, so it only makes sense when the store already sells.
What is cheaper per sale, Basic or Advanced?
Advanced has the lower card rate, 2.5% + 30¢ against 2.9% + 30¢. It only beats Basic overall at high sales volume, because the subscription is $270 a month higher on yearly billing.
