Amazon Associates is Amazon’s affiliate program: you share tracked links to products on Amazon.com and earn a percentage of qualifying purchases made through them. As of October 2026, standard rates run from 1% to 10% depending on the category, and some categories pay nothing. Signing up is free, but your application is only reviewed after you refer three qualifying sales within 180 days.

One reality check before the details: Associates is not a paycheck. Rates per sale are small, and most people earn very little in their first months. The program works for people who already have, or are willing to build, an audience that trusts their product recommendations.

How does the Amazon affiliate program work?

You apply, get a unique tracking ID, and create Special Links to Amazon products. When someone clicks your link and buys, the sale is credited to your account.

Timing is what matters most. Under the Commission Income Statement, a session starts at the click and ends when 24 hours pass, among other triggers listed in the policy. Items added to the cart during that session still count if the order is completed no later than 89 days after the initial click. So your link needs to lead to a fairly quick decision. A reader who clicks today and returns to Amazon on their own next week, with nothing in the cart, earns you nothing.

How much does Amazon pay per category?

Commission is a fixed percentage of qualifying revenue. Selected rates from the official table, as of October 2026:

Rate Categories (examples)
10% Luxury Beauty, Luxury Stores Beauty, Amazon Explore
5% Digital Music, Physical Music, Handmade, Digital Videos
4.5% Physical Books, Kitchen, Automotive
4% Amazon devices (Echo, Kindle, Fire TV), Apparel, Shoes, Jewelry, Watches, Luggage, all other categories
3% Toys, Furniture, Home, Home Improvement, Pet Products, Beauty, Tools, Sports, Baby Products
2.5% PC, PC Components, DVD and Blu-ray
2% Televisions, Digital Video Games
1% Grocery, Health and Personal Care, Physical Video Games and Consoles, Amazon Fresh
0% Gift Cards, Wireless Service Plans, Alcoholic Beverages, Restaurant food, among others

Fine art commissions are capped at US$200 per product. Bounties for sign-ups and trials use separate rates on the same page.

How much do you earn on a sample sale?

Let’s run the numbers with the official rates. A reader clicks your link and buys a US$50 skillet (Kitchen, 4.5%): you earn US$2.25. A US$30 board game (Toys, 3%) pays US$0.90. A US$300 TV (Televisions, 2%) pays US$6.

Now scale it. Suppose, purely as an illustration, that 2 out of every 100 clicks turn into a US$50 kitchen purchase. That is US$4.50 per 100 clicks. This conversion rate is a made-up example to show the math, not a program average. The takeaway: a few hundred visitors a month usually means a few dollars a month. Meaningful amounts need large, steady traffic.

How to join Amazon Associates, step by step

  1. Build a channel first. A website, blog, YouTube channel or social profile with original content. Amazon reviews where your links appear.
  2. Go to affiliate-program.amazon.com and apply with an Amazon account.
  3. List your sites and profiles with exact URLs. Do not use an Amazon trademark, or a misspelling of one, in your domain, subdomain or username: the policies call those sites unsuitable.
  4. Describe your content and audience honestly. This helps during the manual review.
  5. Add your payment and tax information. The Operating Agreement includes a tax schedule, so keep this complete to avoid delays.
  6. Publish the required disclosure (see below).
  7. Create Special Links and use them inside genuinely useful content: reviews, comparisons, buying guides for a real problem.
  8. Refer three qualifying sales within 180 days. After the third, Amazon says it evaluates the application within a day or two and replies with a decision.

What happens if you miss the 180-day deadline?

Your application can be withdrawn if there were not enough qualifying sales in 180 days, and rejected accounts and IDs cannot be reinstated. Accepted accounts face a separate rule: if you earn no commission for 3 years, Amazon may charge a maintenance fee of up to US$10 from unpaid commissions and close the account for dormancy.

When does Amazon pay?

According to the help page, as of October 2026 payments are made monthly once your balance meets the minimum threshold, about 60 days after the end of the month they cover. January earnings, for example, are paid in late March. The page does not list every threshold, so confirm yours in your account; its own gift card example refers to a US$10 threshold.

What disclosures are required?

The Operating Agreement requires this exact statement on your site: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” You also may not imply that Amazon endorses or sponsors you.

The FTC adds its own layer. In its Endorsement Guides Q&A, the agency says the closer a disclosure is to the recommendation, the better, and that readers may miss one placed at the bottom of a page. It also says “paid link” right next to an affiliate link should be adequate, while vague labels like “commissionable link” probably are not. In our view, the safe setup is the Amazon statement on the site plus a short note near the links.

Mistakes that get accounts closed

  • Buying through your own links, or asking friends, relatives or coworkers to do so. Buying for resale is also banned.
  • Offline use: printed material, ebooks, mailings or verbal pitches with your links.
  • Unsolicited email, SMS or DMs. Links in messages are allowed only when the recipient opted in.
  • Rewards for clicks, such as cashback, giveaways or loyalty points tied to your links.
  • Hiding the destination with a link shortener or cloaking so readers can’t tell they are going to Amazon.
  • Hand-typed prices. Price and availability may only come from Amazon-served links or the official APIs, with refresh rules.
  • Amazon trademarks in your domain or app name.

Who is this program not for?

It is not for anyone who needs income in the next few weeks, has no plan to build an audience, or wants to drop links in groups and inboxes. It is also a weak match for niches like grocery or health products, which pay 1% as of October 2026. It suits people who already publish buying content and can wait months for traffic to grow.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost money to join Amazon Associates?

No. Joining is free. Your real costs are the time to create content and, for a website, a domain and hosting.

Can I be an Amazon affiliate without a website?

Amazon’s policies cover social media usernames and influencer content, so a website is not the only option. What matters is original content and a real audience where your links appear.

How long until the first payout?

First you need three qualifying sales to get approved. After that, payments go out monthly about 60 days after the end of the month in which you earned them, once you reach the minimum threshold.

No. Purchasing through your own Special Links, directly or indirectly, is prohibited by the Program Policies and can get your account closed.

Is the Amazon disclosure enough for the FTC?

The FTC says disclosures work best close to the recommendation, so a footer statement alone may be missed. Put a clear note such as “paid link” near your affiliate links as well.
